The First 23 Years

I made my first quilt in 1973 while pregnant with my second daughter. My mother and grandmother both quilted but had not taught me, so I really began from scratch. I wanted a quilt to cover her bassinet, it was awful but it kept her head from rubbing the woven bassinet. My next attempt was a crib quilt for her but I had no one to tell me how large to make it, so I measured the mattress and made it that size. Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam with no room to cover the baby, it just lays flat on the mattress. To say I have learned a lot, is an understatement.

I continued to quilt over the next 23 years while moving around the world with my military husband, holding down a career of my own in hospital administration and rearing my two daughters.

In May 1996, I was diagnosed with gastric cancer; I decided that life was just too short not to do the things we really love best. I changed careers and opened The Quilter’s Quarters in November 1996.

Within the next 8 months my mother had cancer and my sister died of cancer, so I knew I had made the right decision. I continue to learn and share my love of quilting to everyone with whom I come in contact. My special interest is finding more ways to help in cancer research and assisting local organizations through quilting. We have raised thousands of dollars to this end.

I couldn't ask for a more supportive family, given all the hours it takes to run a business, and I am proud to say my granddaughter, Rowan, already loves quilts. My mama always said, "Get them young and train them right," and it looks like Rowan will be the next quilt designer in the family.

Our Time in Leavenworth, Kansas

Quilter's Quarters came to Leavenworth in November of 1996.  We opened on S. 5th St. in only 600 square feet with 300 bolts of fabric. My husband and I retired from the military here in 1992, and my dream came true when I opened The Quilter's Quarters in 1996.

Through the years we have grown to love Leavenworth and the people here and have been involved in many community activities including Main Street Association, Chamber of Commerce activities, Riverfest Festival, and St. Vincent Clinic for Breast Cancer Awareness.  Each year we participate in the local Treasure Hunt activity bringing many of the women owned small businesses together for a fun and informative weekend.

In 2006 Quilter's Quarter's was honored to be selected by American Patchwork and Quilting as one of the top ten quilt shops in North America.  This selection was made after the editors and staff of the magazine reviewed over 500 applicants for the award.  Copies of the magazine are available in the store when you visit and we would love to share our success story with you!
